OH boys’ and girls’ soccer teams seeing early success

The Olympic Heights boys’ soccer team appears to be headed for another successful season.  Coming off last season’s record of 11-9-2, the boys team is currently 8-3-4 and is ranked as the number seven team in the county.  The team is looking to improve this season, and head coach Michael Taylor says that improvement will be achieved through “hard work, skill, and the right attitude.”

Junior Christian Witkowski is currently leading the team with ten goals through 12  games.  Taylor identifies Cruz as one of the key standout players on the team.  Other key players for the Lions include seniors Tiago Santos and Aaron Ott, junior Harrison Fuster, and sophomore Cody Mohar.

Taylor added that the toughest opponents for the Lions this season will be Royal Palm Beach High and Boca Raton.  It is very important for the Lions to stay motivated throughout the season and to work as hard as they can.

Senior Khalid Iqab is very excited about this season, saying, “I’m looking forward to getting the best record that this school has had in a long time.”  Iqab also stressed  how much effort that the student athletes are putting into the team, adding that the team has their mind’s set on winning districts this season.

GIRLS SOCCER

The girls’ soccer season is underway and is also off to a great start.  Coach Jim Cappello says that expectations are high and that they are “looking to build on last season’s success.”

Last season, the team’s record was 8-13-2. In the district, the Lions finished 4-3-1.  The team also impressively reached the district semi-finals.  The Lions look to add onto their past success by reaching the district finals this year.

Cappello says that “being more competitive” is something that he expects from all of his players.  In order to reach their goals, Cappello says, “A key is through team chemistry.  We have the talent but playing together as a team will be extremely important.”

Cappello also went on to talk about the team’s competition and says that “no team is to be taken lightly” and that their matches against Dwyer and Suncoast will be their toughest.

The team is looking to get leadership from senior players Madison Sonntag, Nicole Greenberg, and Clarissa Tusa. Other key players include junior Mady Miller and freshman Jaselyn Cappello.  Cappello has already been featured as a Palm Beach County athlete of the week in both the Palm Beach Post Gametime section and on WPEC-TV CBS 12.

Tusa sums it up best by saying that she is looking forward to winning districts to top off her senior year.  She also adds, “I’m already making unforgettable memories with my teammates, and I love how close the team has gotten.  We are like a family, and I hope that can help to improve us as a team on the field.”
