OH Wrestlers take third county title in four years

La, Kosoy, Singer win individual titles

The Olympic Heights wrestling team lowered the “boom” on the rest of Palm Beach County over the weekend of Feb. 6 by winning its third county title in four years.

“The boys have been looking forward to this since last year,” OH coach Boomer Mears told the Palm Beach Post.  Mears was referring to last year’s county championships where the Heights wrestlers came up short in their bid to three-peat after winning the title in 2012 and 2013.

The Lions regained the county crown with 206 points, besting runner-up Wellington (183.5 points) and third place finisher American Heritage (135 points).

Sending six wrestlers to the championship rounds of the tournament, OH walked away with three individual championships. Quang La won  the 145-pound title with a 7-6 decision over Wellington’s Michael James. Laurence Kosoy took the 160-pound championship with a 3-0 decision, and Stefan Singer won in the heavyweight division by pinning West Boca’s Daniel Mirtil 30 seconds into the second period.

“We have an experienced bunch of kids who have sacrificed a lot,” Mears commented. “Everyone wants a trophy, but not everyone is willing to work hard enough for it.”
