Lions drop to 2-3 after 62-0 loss to Atlantic

Too fast. Too big. Too strong. Too athletic.

It doesn’t take much more than that to sum up the freight train of a football team the Olympic Heights Lions got in the way of in their 62-0 loss to the Atlantic Eagles on Thursday, Sept. 26 at Corey Lewis Stadium.

Atlantic’s scored early and often with their first touchdown of the game came coming on their first play from scrimmage on a 3-yard run after returning an OH punt down to the Lions’ 3-yard line. The Eagles ended up scoring touchdowns on seven of their eight possessions, including a 65-yard drive, two 75-yard drives, and an 80-yard drive. Atlantic also scored touchdowns on a one-play drive of consisting of a 53-yard pass, a 13-yard fumble recovery after an OH errant backwards pass, and a 70-yard punt return.

The lone bright spot for the Lions’ defense came when defensive back Josh Williams intercepted an Atlantic 35-yard pass attempt on the Eagles’ third possession of the game.

As strong as the Atlantic offense was, the defense was even stronger, holding OH’s total yardage for the game to a negative 28 yards: 13 yards rushing and a negative 41 yards on pass plays due to sacks and pass catches and tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

The loss drops the Lions’ record to 2-3 on the season and comes after two consecutive wins over John I. Leonard and Spanish River. OH has a bye-week this week which it will use to prepare for its road game of October 11 against a strong Blanche Ely Tigers team (5-1). Kickoff is at 6:00 p.m.
