Lady Gaga’s cosmetic line Haus Laboratories is just one of several launched by celebrities.

More and more celebrities are using their fame and credibility to their advantage by creating their very own cosmetic brands. Lady Gaga has just introduced Haus Laboratories, and Selena Gomez launched her makeup brand Rare Beauty this past year with both receiving positive feedback. Rihanna has had her Fenty Beauty cosmetic brand out since 2017 which has made almost $570 million in revenue. These celebrities are cashing in on their own line of cosmetics.

Lady Gaga:  Already at the pinnacle of stardom, Lady Gaga is now making a name for herself with her own makeup line called Haus Laboratories. Haus Laboratories Is a vegan and cruelty-free cosmetic brand that was launched exclusively on Amazon. On the Haus Laboratories official website, Lady Gaga explains the importance of her brand and the sentimental meaning behind it, recalling how when she was younger she never felt beautiful and struggled to find her inner and outer beauty.

She goes on to talk about how she grew up watching her mother put on makeup which made her want to do the same, using “makeup as a way to make [her] dreams of being as strong as [her] mother become true.” It was then that the young Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta dreamt up her persona of  Lady Gaga, using makeup to find her inner “superhero.” Gaga explains how people tore her down and told her it was “weird,” but adds, “I was just Born This Way.”

The brand’s biggest hit is the eyeshadows and eyeliners. Its intentions are for people to recreate Lady Gaga’s crazy looks and the looks she had on stage in her role in the 2018 film A Star is Born. With all different vibrant colors and different glitters, Haus Laboratories gives people the opportunity to express themselves as their own “superhero.” Haus also created a series of wind stickers to create Lady Gaga’s iconic cat-eye. Olympic Heights junior Danielle Morrone bought the liquid eyeliner in the color black and explains how it “has a great application and pigment, and it’s very easy to put on and clean up if you make a mistake.”

Selena Gomez: Gomez’s cosmetic line is called Rare Beauty and its mission is to redefine what it means to be beautiful in order to make everyone enjoy their uniqueness. Gomez’s brand, released in January of 2020, is all about encouraging people to embrace themselves, and with their products Rare Beauty is providing customers with the resources they need to feel a little less alone in the world.

Gomez wants to eliminate false expectations of beauty. Before releasing Rare Beauty to the world, Gomez released her album titled Rare with songs about self-love, learning to love yourself and letting go of people who tear you down. Since Rare Beauty isn’t about pretending to be someone else, this makeup is designed to make users feel good while not hiding their individuality.

On the official Rare Beauty website, Gomez explains how her beauty company can be more than just another cosmetics brand, posting, “I want us all to stop comparing ourselves to each other and just start embracing our own uniqueness.”

OH junior Brooke Hollander has the Stay Vulnerable Liquid Eyeshadow in the shade Nearly Berry and says, “I love this color, and I love how quick and easy it is to put on. It goes from a liquid to a soft powder on your eye so it doesn’t feel sticky.”

With its foundations, Rare Beauty promotes its Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation by saying on its website that it is meant to be “Weightless and breathable, with all-day medium to full coverage that melts into skin to look and feel like you.” Within each of its products, Rare Beauty makes sure to note that the makeup won’t cover up a person’s natural beauty but will only enhance it. Gomez wants people to embrace their imperfections as she truly believes that doing so is the only way one can love themself.

Rihanna: In September 2017, Rihanna released Fenty Beauty to the world. After years of experimenting with the top-of-the-line cosmetics in the beauty industry, Rihanna was inspired to develop Fenty Beauty because she saw a gap in the market for products that suited all skin types and tones.

She designed her makeup collection “so that people everywhere would be included,” as explained on the Fenty Beauty website. Concentrating on a diverse range of typically complicated and difficult skin tones, Fenty Beauty created formulations that work with all skin types and basic shades. Rihanna’s most important message that she wants to spread through her makeup line is that “Makeup is there for you to have fun with…It should never feel like a uniform.”

Rihanna also wants to make sure that women know that makeup is a choice, and that people should never feel pressured into wearing makeup. Fenty Beauty has a line of lipsticks and lip glosses in a variety of colors and glitters to make makeup-wearing fun. From the Fenty Beauty line. OH junior Skylar Berman has the lip gloss called Gloss Bomb Universal.” “It’s really good because it’s super shiny and looks so good!” Berman explains. “This lip gloss is also not that sticky and the price is also not that bad compared to other makeup lines.”

Overall, with their cosmetic companies, all of these singers wanted to make an impact on the world of beauty and wanted to make sure that women felt beautiful while wearing makeup and without wearing makeup.
