2015 NFL PREVIEW
Are You Ready for Some Football?
NFC EAST
Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles have been the talk of the offseason. Chip Kelly’s offensive playbook does a phenomenal job at putting running backs in the ideal spot to make plays. With the new addition of Demarco Murray, the ball should be handed off and run up the middle often. If everyone is able to stay healthy, look for this organization to make waves. The Eagles will go 11-5, and win the division.
Dallas Cowboys: The Dallas Cowboys have had a pretty quiet offseason, except for the loss of star running back, Demarco Murray. Murray was the key player of Dallas’ offense, so the Cowboys will have to decrease the use of the running game, and look for wide receiver Cole Beasley, and tight end Jason Witten as the main offensive focus. Dallas’ main weakness is their secondary. Their defensive coverage was ranked the worst in the NFL last season. If Dallas wants to have a playoff chance, quarterback Tony Romo will have to step up his game this season, which is highly unlikely. Nonetheless, Dallas will give the Eagles a run for their money at 10-6, and hopefully land themselves a wild-card spot.
New York Giants: The New York Giants have proved that they are a banged-up mess of a team over the last few seasons. The Giants added running back Shane Vereen to their roster, a player who will see a lot of carries this year. This offense has a chance to be dominant this year, as long as QB Eli Manning can continue at his level of play with wide-outs Odell Beckham Jr. and Victor Cruz. The real issue lies in the defensive side of the field where the Giants are lacking in linebackers, leaving the middle of the field wide open to opposing receivers. At best, the Giants will finish at 8-8.
Washington Redskins: The Washington Redskins are having serious trouble at every aspect of the game. Quarterback Robert Griffin III, known as RGIII, has been benched for back-up Kirk Cousins. Head coach Jay Gruden is on a very short leash with not a whole lot of talent to work with. When asked if the Redskins have a chance to make the playoffs, DeSean Jackson said, “Hang on, let me see what I am allowed to say.” The Washington Redskins will finish at a lousy 6-10.
NFC SOUTH
Atlanta Falcons: The Falcons have re-signed Julio Jones to a massive five-year contract extension, taking up a lot of opportunity to make quality moves with the roster. Third-round draft pick Tevin Coleman, the rookie running back, has been entrusted with the starting position. This team has great veteran leadership, with new head coach Dan Quinn. This is a team who has proven that they are efficient at putting points on the board, look for them to continue that and push their way to the top of the NFC South at 9-7.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Since coach Lovie Smith took over this organization, the Buccaneers have failed to win a single home game. First overall pick in the 2015 draft Jameis Winston will prove why he was picked first and dominate the NFC South. With a good young player core, including wide receiver Mike Evans, watch for things to trend upward in the 727. The Bucs will go 9-7, tying the Falcons for the division.
New Orleans Saints: The Saints have hit their rough patch. Star tight end Jimmy Graham was traded tonthe Seattle Seahawks for 29-year-old center Max Unger. New Orleans had their season cut short last year due to their inability to stop turning over the ball. Sean Peyton is still a great coach, and Drew Brees is still an elite QB. Brandin Cooks is a very talented young wide receiver. Josh Hill will be the new tight end & the player to watch. The tight end had been a key position for this organization for many years. The Saints will finish at 7-9.
Carolina Panthers: The development of quarterback Cam Newton is strong. Newton is an elite talent and absolutely amazing athletically. Luke Kuechly leads the defense, along with linebacker Thomas Davis. The Panthers are hoping to build off of a season last year that put them in the playoffs. Their number one target, wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin tore his ACL, benching him for the season. That injury is a big hit to this team and will force Carolina into a 6-10 season, putting them in last place in the NFC South.
NFC NORTH
Green Bay Packers: Aaron Rodgers is the reigning MVP from a Green Bay Packers that consistently seem unstoppable. Jordy Nelson’s injury is a huge blow to this team, that can’t seem to stay healthy through a preseason. Nonetheless, the Packers are still expected to hold on to one of the two top spots in the NFC, finishing at 10-6.
Detroit Lions: Quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Calvin Johnson continue to show why they are arguably one of the deadliest offensive duos in the NFL. The Lions brought in Golden Tate, who is another amazingly athletic wide receiver. Look for the Lions to be a dark horse playoff contender, finishing at 9-7.
Minnesota Vikings: The return of Adrian Peterson has fantasy owners excited. During the five preseason games they played, Minnesota was explosive, starting off strong and not slowing down. Harrison Smith is an impact defender at the safety position. Between AP and Smith, things are finally looking up for the Vikings. Minnesota will finish at 9-7.
Chicago Bears: Jay Cutler, long-time Bears quarterback, is an accident waiting to happen. Cutler tends to throw interceptions at the worst times. The quarterback is a consistent disappointment to the large contract he signed. The departure of wide-out Brandon Marshall leaves Alshon Jeffery and rookie Kevin White, who was placed on the Physically Unable To Perform (PUP) list – which rules him out for the first six games and possibly his entire rookie season – leaving the Bears with a lack of offensive firepower. The Bears will finish at 7-9.
NFC WEST
Seattle Seahawks: With the new addition of long-time Saints tight end Jimmy Graham, Russell Wilson has a new target. Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch add a dynamic duo of running backs. Russell Wilson is proving he is an elite quarterback. The defense is obviously strong, even with Kam Chancellor is holding out. The only hit Seattle took is that they lost Byron Maxwell in free agency. The Seahawks will finish at 11-5.
San Francisco 49ers: Under the watch of new head coach, Jim Tomsula, the 49ers are looking at a brand new style of offensive play. Many key players for San Fransisco either retired or left the organization. There is no doubt the 49ers are looking to rebuild with Colin Kaepernick at quarterback. The 49ers will finish at 9-7.
St. Louis Rams: The Rams acquired quarterback Nick Foles to be the new franchise QB for years to come. St. Louis is working with a great defensive line. They drafted running back Todd Gurley with the 10th pick in the draft. The Rams have too much of a lack in depth at the secondary, and that right there will bring them to their downfall. The Rams will finish this season at 7-9.
Arizona Cardinals: Quarterback Carson Palmer returning from ACL injury could finally be the spark the Cardinals need to bring back the flame that carried the team to the playoffs multiple times. The window for Arizona to win a Super Bowl ring is closing rapidly, and will continue to close as Arizona will have one last lackluster season before things start to look up for them. The Cardinals will finish at 6-10.
AFC EAST
Miami Dolphins: This is the year the Miami Dolphins fans have been waiting for. The development of Ryan Tannehill has given Miami the quarterback they need, especially now that he can throw the deep pass. Jarvis Landry is a good, young wide receiver who will definitely be targeted by Tannehill in close-game situations. Miami brought in Ndamukong Suh, only adding to the strong defense led by linebacker Cameron Wake. The Dolphins have become a serious threat to the New England Patriots. Miami will finish at 11-5, tying the Patriots for the AFC East and landing themselves in one of the top spots in the AFC.
New England Patriots: Every football fan has been following the “Deflategate” scandal, and it is now known that Tom Brady will play all 16 regular season games, barring injury. The Patriots are still an elite team, and they are expected to finish near the top of the AFC. New England will finish at 11-5, tying the Dolphins for the AFC East.
Buffalo Bills: The Buffalo Bills made a big move in receiving running back LeSean McCoy from the Eagles, only giving up linebacker Kiko Alonso. Wide receiver Sammy Watkins has shown that he is one of the best young receivers in the game today. This is an organization filled with playmakers, and with Rex Ryan at the head coach position, things are going to get better for the Bills. That being said, the Bills are still not in a spot where they are able to contend against the Dolphins and the Patriots, and Buffalo will finish at 9-7.
New York Jets: The Jets have new leadership on the sideline in new head coach Todd Bowles, a former NFL defensive end. With their starting quarterback, Geno Smith, out 6-8 weeks, this is going to be yet again a struggle of a season for the Jets. New York brought wide receiver Brandon Marshall and cornerback Darelle Revis back to the organization. The Jets have some great receivers in their arsenal, but there isn’t a good enough arm at the quarterback position to get them the ball in the right situations. The Jets will finish at 4-12.
AFC SOUTH
Indianapolis Colts: The Colts brought in many big names during free agency, to what is already one of the most dominant teams in football. With Andrew Luck at quarterback, the offense drives the football down the field, efficiently and effectively. Indianapolis had some key pick-ups in RB Frank Gore, WR Andre Johnson, DE Trent Cole, DE Kendall Langford, G Todd Herremans, and S Dwight Lowery. Indy will bring back the running game now that Frank Gore is the starter and not Trent Richardson. The Indianapolis Colts will finish at 13-3.
Tennessee Titans: The Tennessee Titans lost quarterback Jake Locker when he retired earlier this year. The Titans had no struggle filling that hole as they used the second pick in the 2015 NFL Draft to pick up quarterback Marcus Mariota out of Oregon. This organization needs Mariota and other young players to make some positive plays. Tennessee brought in a legendary linebacker in Brian Orakpo. The record won’t show it, but this year will finally have things looking up for the Titans as they finish with a 6-10 record.
Houston Texans: Houston has a very big problem in lighting a fire under their offense. The Texans have no big names in their lineup, and the only exciting player to watch on this organization is defensive end J.J. Watt. Houston brought Brian Hoyer in from the Cleveland Browns to fill in the starting quarterback role. Don’t expect anything great this year from Houston, as again they will disappoint with a 5-11 record.
Jacksonville Jaguars: At the beginning of the 2014 NFL season, the Jacksonville Jaguars had some shining players, especially in wide receiver Allen Hurns. Two games into the season showed there was a steady decline in performance and in confidence. Expect the same thing in the 2015 season, but without the shine. The Jacksonville Jaguars will finish at 2-14.
AFC NORTH
Pittsburgh Steelers: Last year, this team won the division title with an 11-5 record, and this year, they look even better. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is still in his prime, and wide receiver Antonio Brown has made sure everyone knows he’s one of the league’s top receivers. Running back Le’veon Bell will sit out the first two games due to suspension, but he has shown he’s a premier runner. The Steelers will finish top of their division at 11-5, yet again.
Cincinnati Bengals: Every year, Cincinnati starts off their season strong, and finishes their season the same way. The Bengals just can’t seem to find a way to win a playoff game for four straight seasons. The Bengals’ offense is strong with A.J. Green at wide receiver and with running back Jeremy Hill. The Cincinnati Bengals will finish at 10-6.
Baltimore Ravens: There are many questions about the Ravens’ wide receivers, now that rookie Breshad Perriman is out for at least the first game of the season. The Ravens will have to rely on veteran receiver Steve Smith, and Justin Forsett, an unproven running back. The defense looks strong, but Baltimore won’t be able to contend with Pittsburgh, as Baltimore finishes with a 8-8 record.
Cleveland Browns: Cleveland has put a lot of trust into Josh McCown, a quarterback who was less than mediocre for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Browns went with McCown over Johnny Manziel, who was in rehabilitation for alcohol dependency. Other than Joe Haden, a stellar cornerback, the Browns have a struggling defense, and their season won’t be anything more than a run-of-the-mill attempt. The Cleveland Browns will finish at 7-9.
AFC WEST
Denver Broncos: After Peyton Manning’s passing game started to decline in the second half of the 2014-15 season, there’s no doubt that under Gary Kubiak, Denver is going to utilize C.J. Anderson and his run game a lot more than they have in the past. This preseason, Denver led the NFL in sacks (20), and if their defense can stay healthy, there’s no reason why Denver shouldn’t lead the division. The Denver Broncos will finish at 11-5.
Kansas City Chiefs: The Kansas City Chiefs are showing too many of the same problems that they did in the 2014 season, where they finished with a 9-7 record. The Chiefs consistently wait for players to play well, and they didn’t decide on a set starting lineup until very late in the 2014 season. With the new addition of wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, it’s almost guaranteed that Doug Pederson, the offensive coordinator for the Chiefs, will look for Alex Smith to throw the ball more than ever before. The Kansas City Chiefs will finish with a 9-7 record, just like last season.
San Diego Chargers: San Diego seems to complete the season with the same results, the same exact way. In both 2012 and 2013, the Chargers finished with a 9-7 record, and they haven’t finished two games ahead or under .500 since the 2009 season. Philip Rivers struggled in the second half of last season, after he played the first half like a top-three quarterback. Antonio Gates being suspended for the first four games of the 2015 season doesn’t help the Chargers’ case at all. The San Diego Chargers will finish at 8-8, placing third in the AFC West.
Oakland Raiders: The Oakland Raiders have a young core of players, including quarterback Derek Carr, defensive-end Khalil Mack, and wide receiver Amari Cooper. The Oakland Raiders are a work-in-progress, there just isn’t any other way to say it. This will be the final season of Oakland’s rebuilding years, and next year, the Raiders might be able to make a real run next season. The Oakland Raiders will finish 3-13.
NFC Champion: Seattle Seahawks
AFC Champion: Miami Dolphins
Super Bowl Champion: Miami Dolphins
