Heights Wrestlers Dominate Tri-County Meet

The Olympic Heights wrestling team celebrates its championship at the Tri-County Meet.

Olympic Heights hosted the annual tri-county wrestling tournament involving 27 high school teams from Palm Beach, Broward and Dade counties on Friday, Jan. 22 and Saturday, Jan. 23. This has been OH’s largest tournament to date and was ultimately a very successful one for the Lions grapplers.

Placing first in the tournament with 256.50 points, OH dominated the tournament throughout all weight classes, placing far and ahead of runner-up Southwest Miami with 236.60 points. The scores of the placing teams after that dropped-off drastically with third place Cypress Bay scoring 201.

Winning championship medals in their weight class were seniors Laurence Kosoy (170 lbs.) and Alexi Castro (220), both of whom remain undefeated thus far this season. Kosoy also remains the number one ranked wrestler for his weight class in the state.

Sam Cannova (160) and Stefen Singer (285) both placed second. Third place spots were won by Eric Lentz (145) and Dan Georges (152), ranked 3rd and 14th, respectively. Fourth place spots were won by Paul Steger (113), Nicholas Peglow (132) and Ethan Altabet (126). Taking the sixth place spots were Fabian Jaramillo (106), Chance Scott (120) and Garrett Davidofsky (195).

As the season begins and the team makes it run up to the paramount post-season tournaments, these preliminary tournaments do a great deal in preparing the wrestlers for the challenges ahead.
