Predicting the NBA Draft for the Lottery Teams
The time of the year where fans of the National Basketball Association (NBA) worldwide to anticipate which young athlete will be selected to their favorite organization has come, and with it comes the 2016 NBA Draft Lottery.
For those who are unaware, the NBA Draft Lottery is an annual event in which each team that didn’t make the playoffs the previous season participate in a lottery where the order of the teams drawn becomes the order of that year’s draft.
The draft class of players that are entering the draft this year is filled with raw talent and for the most part, each organization already knows who is being brought on to their respective rosters.
The first pick of the draft fell into the hands of the Philadelphia 76ers. Every basketball fan knows that the Philadelphia 76ers have become the laughingstock of this league. After finishing last season with a win-loss record of 10-72, it is hard not to be. This is a team who hopes to flip the script on their angry fans by drafting a forward from Louisiana State University by the name of Ben Simmons.
Ben Simmons is a player, standing tall at 6’10” and broad at 240 pounds, who is very well suited for Philadelphia’s style of play. Simmons is a talented player with athleticism and agility and will fit in nicely with head coach Brett Brown’s schematics.
The second pick of the draft is owned by the Los Angeles Lakers. There is no surprise that this organization is looking upon the small forward from Duke University, Brandon Ingram.
Ingram is the perfect player for the Lakers at this stage of their development. With last year’s first-round pick in D’Angelo Russell setting up all of the plays at the point guard spot, Ingram will most definitely be utilized as a quick shooter and a tough finisher in the paint.
Pick number three in the 2016 NBA Draft belongs to none other than the Boston Celtics. Celtics fans should not be shocked to hear Dragan Bender’s name from the mouth of commissioner Adam Silver in late June.
Bender is an extremely unique, somewhat one-of-a-kind. He is a 7’1” power forward/center from Croatia, who is able to perform multiple uncharacteristic skills for a man of his height. Bender is able to space the floor well, handle the ball like a guard, and defend. This is a player who could develop well under coach Brad Stevens and may have star potential.
With the fourth pick, there doesn’t seem to be an inkling of doubt that Jaylen Brown, the freshman forward from the University of California, will be joining the Phoenix Suns.
Brown has an unbelievable skill when it comes to transition defense, so there won’t be an issue when he gets thrown into the fast-paced scheme Phoenix has become accustomed to. Jaylen Brown is a high-quality athlete that will be a natural fit with the Suns. The Suns also hold the thirteenth pick in the first round.
The Minnesota Timberwolves were lucky with their last two first-rounders in Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns. They are looking for their next big hit with the fifth pick in Buddy Hield, the shooting guard from Oklahoma.
Hield would be able to provide a boost in scoring. Buddy Hield has the second-most three-pointers in a season at the collegiate level of all-time. Also, Hield is the only athlete to average 25 points per game and a field goal percentage of above 66. With Wiggins, Towns, and LaVine as his supporting cast, Hield should blossom into a star.
The New Orleans Pelicans have are definitely in need of a spark with the sixth pick, and Kris Dunn, a point guard from Providence, might just be the guy to start the ignition.
All-Star power forward Anthony Davis needs a set-up man, and the play style between the two seem to complement each others’ extremely well. Dunn also excels at starting the fast-break.
Jamal Murray will be joining the Denver Nuggets with the seventh pick and will most likely become the starting shooting guard, as there seems to be a lack of depth in that position for this organization.
Murray is an extremely talented shooter who should find success in Denver with Emmanuel Mudiay in his corner.
With the eighth pick in the draft, the Sacramento Kings will select Furkan Korkmaz, an 18-year-old international baller from Turkey. Only behind Hield, it seems to be that Korkmaz is the second-best perimeter shooter this draft has to offer. The only downside to this athlete is that he may need a year on the bench to watch and develop, as his minutes in the games he’s played has been very limited at around twelve minutes per game.
With the ninth pick in the draft, the Toronto Raptors will add Marquese Chriss, the young power forward from the University of Washington. Chriss could fill the void in Toronto’s lineup when it comes to big men. Chriss is a very versatile player who might just be the best player the draft has to offer for the Raptors.
Finally, ending the lottery picks, with the tenth pick in the draft, the Milwaukee Bucks will invest their trust in Wade Baldwin IV, the sophomore point guard from the University of Vanderbilt. Baldwin could be that revitalization Milwaukee has been looking for in the point guard slot. He has a wingspan of six feet and eleven inches, which helps his ability to dunk the ball and become a dangerous defender.
This year’s draft may be one of the most exciting ones the NBA has had to offer over the past few years. As previously stated, this draft class is filled with young, raw talent with some serious potential to become the next Steph Curry or LeBron James.
The NBA Draft takes place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on June 23, 2016.
