JV Basketball Team Looks to Halt Three-Game Skid

Lions small forward Gio Vilbrun (0) blocks the West Boca’s starting point guard’s shot in the loss on Friday, Dec. 8.

After dropping their Dec. 8 game to West Boca, the Olympic Heights JV Basketball team is 1-3 with three-game losing streak at the moment. Their first game was a win over Saint John Paul II Academy by twelve points. At halftime the team was up by more than twenty points but the lead dwindled to as low as ten points during the fourth quarter.

The Lions JV squad looked like they would be a top team this season when they easily won their opening game 70-58, but they are now on a three-game skid and the state of this team is uncertain. The team’s first loss of the season came in overtime to Spanish River High by eleven. Starting point guard Marc Steig had a great game scoring 34 points (with 10 three pointers) including a buzzer-beating three pointer to tie the game at the end of regulation. The Sharks controlled the overtime period, however, giving the Lions their first loss of their current three game skid. Ther last two games have been blow out losses to Royal Palm Beach High and West Boca High by an almost fifty combined points.

With little effort provided in these last two games, the question is: Does this team really want to win? Although the potential to be a great team is there, the defense just wasn’t good in the games against Royal Palm and West Boca, and the team has looked as if they just don’t want it badly enough.

The team has three home games this week in which they will look to get on a winning streak. They play Forest Hill on Tuesday, Seminole Ridge on Thursday, and Boynton Beach on Friday. Will they go into the holiday break on a three-game winning streak, or will they continue the disappointment of this season so far? If they can win all three games this week, it may give more to consider when thinking about how good this team really is.
