The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) announced the annual school ratings in August 2024, and Olympic Heights High School has regained its “A” school status. This comes after last year when the school dropped to a “B” status for the first time since 2016. With this increase in the school’s rating, OH has reclaimed its spot among the best schools in Palm Beach County.
To some community stakeholders, the thought of OH earning an “A” status seemed unlikely. Nearly half (48.9%) of the OH student population is listed as “economically disadvantaged” by the state. This financial struggle can make it harder for students to afford tutoring and other educational resources to perform well in school. In addition to this, 28% of students at OH have been in or are currently enrolled in the school’s ESOL program. This could be a perceived barrier to the school’s success on Florida’s FAST exam, which features questions related to poetry, literary elements, and interpreting figurative language that could be complex to someone just learning English. Yet year after year, OH continues to overcome these obstacles.
According to FLDOE’s school grade database, OH’s highest-performing test categories were the US History End of Course Exam (EOC) taken by juniors and the Biology EOC taken by mainly freshmen and sophomores, with the school earning an “A” in both categories. Additionally, our school saw a 58% increase in English learning gains and a 43% increase in math learning gains on state tests last year, which also contributed to our improved school grade.
One of OH’s biggest achievements was retaining its 100% graduation rate, a huge help in increasing the school’s rating, as well as an important consideration for families in the area thinking about sending their children to OH.
“We are thrilled to be an ‘A’ school again,” Principal Burke commented when asked about OH’s academic achievement. “Last year, I am proud to say that we went up significantly in every single tested area.” In addition to the school’s test scores, Burke recognized OH’s impressive graduation rate and teaching staff. “Once again, we were able to maintain our 100% graduation rate,” Burke expressed. “Teachers worked collaboratively to not only plan, but also meet to use data to drive instruction.” As for the future, Burke says she plans on “continuing to increase our scores and high expectations for the students.”
Most of the teaching staff at OH share Burke’s optimistic view for the school’s academic gains. “Regaining our ‘A’ status is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, staff, and administrators,” stated Sarah Cummings, AICE Lang teacher. In the future, “the English department will continue to focus on developing critical thinking skills, effective writing strategies, and an appreciation for literature, and continue to make learning more relevant and enjoyable,” Cummings continued. They plan to do this by fostering a love of learning and providing OH students with the tools they need to succeed.
A similar sentiment can be found within the math department. “I think it’s a very exciting time [to be an ‘A’ school],” Alex Celis, geometry teacher, told the Torch. Though it was a bit disappointing dropping to a “B” last year, Celis explained, “We are very excited for the future as a math department in how we can become better and help keep our ‘A’ status.” The math department plans to “focus on the standards and give students exposure to higher level mathematical problems.” Hopefully, this will not only increase the scores but the students’ overall understanding of math, essentially preparing them for college math.
It is clear that the school’s upgraded status has heightened morale on campus and established OH as the pride of Boca. “With the various teaching strategies we have put in place and monitoring of both data and staff, I have no doubt we will continue to increase our school grade percentage next year!” Principal Burke confidently announced.

What a tremendous accomplishment for the staff and students of OH; even at such a disadvantaged position, the Pride of Boca still manages to earn such a high regard in Florida. The article was able to demonstrate this point with excellence, providing a vast array of statistics. It truly goes to show that resources, and money, and advantages, and a strong pull of students is not needed to earn the “A.”

This post shows how Olympic Heights overcame challenges to get its “A” rating back. It uses statistics, like the 58% increase in English learning gains, to prove how much the school has improved.

This article is very compelling. it exemplifies olympic heights students academic achievements and our overcoming of hard situations. despite facing set backs such as financial struggles we still overcame that and was listed one of the “best schools in Palm Beach county” The strong vocabulary and statistics they used heightened the purpose of the article and made it more compelling to the readers.

Olympic Heights returns to “A” status as a testament to resilience and collaboration, showing that obstacles such as economic disadvantages or language barriers are truly not too tall of an order. Is it not amazing how hard work and a shared vision can turn challenges into triumphs? The work ethic and commitment of Principal Burke, the teachers, and students are evident in the improved test scores and a 100% graduation rate. With such a strong foundation, OH seems ready not only to maintain excellence but also to soar to even greater heights next year!

This article is really intriguing. It is nice that our hard work is getting our school back to the standing we deserve. Even though most students are listed as “having disadvantages” we still overcame. We saw the mountain and we conquered it!
Cristian Romero • Dec 13, 2024 at 12:05 am
This article really emphasizes the idea that no mountain is too high to climb. Despite facing economic challenges and many foreign students, the commitment by the staff to increase the instruction to the students really emphasizes their resilience and dedication to making the school a great learning environment. The evidence is also there to back it up with a 43% increase in learning from the math department and a 58% increase from the English department.

Good use of stats and strong vocabulary. Good in depth reasonings for why the letter dropped. Focuses on different areas of academics and compares them from before to now.

This article cleverly uses rhetorical questions like, “Messi or Haaland?” and “Will Haaland’s impressive goal-rich season win him the Ballon d’Or?” to engage readers and spark debate among soccer fans. These questions reflect the intense speculation surrounding the prestigious award and make the story more dynamic. The detailed comparisons of Messi’s World Cup triumph and Haaland’s record-breaking season highlight the tough competition for this year’s winner.

This article was intriguing because it talks about our school, and discusses our recent grading. Previously, we had dropped to a B in 2023. However, this was due to Olympic Heights dealing with challenges such as economically disadvantaged students and students learning english. However, our school achieved a remarkable success of having a 100% graduation rate. We also saw significant improvement in English and Math. One rhetorical device I found was an appeal to ethos. Principal Burke mentions many teachers such as Alex Celis and Sarah Cummings and shared their insights on the achievements of the school.
Jacob Stern • Dec 12, 2024 at 5:50 pm
Getting back Olympic Heights’ “A” rating is evidence that work ethic and collaboration may have significant beneficial effects. The school not only met but exceeded objectives despite obstacles like a large number of ESOL students and financial difficulties. This achievement relates to a comeback story showing what can be achieved when educators, administrators, and students work collectively.

Nice work! I liked how this article shows Olympic Heights’ success, showing how hard work, dedication, and teamwork helped overcome challenges. Succeeding despite financial struggles, language barriers, and other obstacles shows our school’s strong determination. This story reminds us that with effort and teamwork, success is not just possible—it’s certain.

Great job! I didn’t know OH saw a 58% increase in English learning gains last year. That’s an amazing improvement and reflects the hard work of both the teachers and students and the juxtaposition highlights the success of the school despite the obstacles.

And it’s great to see Olympic Heights High School return to “A” school status. Even though, unlike some schools, about 63 percent of its kids are economically disadvantaged and 18 percent are English language learners. This post does an excellent job of addressing how, despite these challenges, the school’s commitment to student success still comes across. As evidenced by the astounding 58% increase in learning gains in English and 43% in learning gains in mathematics, hard work and teamwork between our staff and our students works! How did OH turn this around? This is evidence of the power of grit and a data-driven approach to instructions, which can turn around even the most difficult cases against all odds. It is a true credit to the efforts of the whole school community.

It’s incredible that despite nearly half of OH students being “economically disadvantaged” the school still regained its A status, which shows the hard work that teachers and students put at OH.
tyler s. • Nov 20, 2024 at 11:24 am
Heard about this when we first got here. its amazing to see a school succeed and get more recognition due to its score. a little ironic that a school bend on grading its students gets a grade itself.
ari • Nov 20, 2024 at 11:22 am
so proud to say I go to an “A” school, such a great written story

This was a very good article and I appreciate all the teachers and staff that have worked hard to get the schools A status back. Although I am shocked that we were an A school since 2016 until last year but glad we got it back.

I think that its crazy that we have been an A school since 20216 and then dropped last year and now we are back at an A status. I find it interesting that the highest performance scores were the US History End of Course Exam and the Biology Exam

Great story! It’s amazing that olympic heights is back to A status this is a great school.
Max • Nov 19, 2024 at 11:35 am
I’m glad that OH got their A rank back. It was definitely hard, especially with the amount of ESOL students being more than a quarter of the school.

Good article. I never knew this was an A school
Max • Nov 19, 2024 at 11:32 am
Glad to here that our school is back to A tier after dropping last year.
Brielle Crawley • Nov 19, 2024 at 11:29 am
I personally have mixed emotions about our school rating, as I feel like it is teaching kids to care only about grades other than learning itself. However, this article is very well researched and the author seems well informed
marissa • Nov 19, 2024 at 11:25 am
i think its great our school went up again! being in an a school is a lot better than being in a b school.

Both students and teachers at OH have been working hard even with struggles. It’s amazing how well other students are doing and I’m sure the OH staff are very proud of how the school is doing.
Giada • Nov 19, 2024 at 11:19 am
I find this very interesting because of all of the debates and eoc. A eoc that I noticed in the article was the eoc that’s taken by freshmen and sophomores and the increase in passing.
