Basketball is not just about having the best players and winning the most games – it’s about strategy and the unbreakable bonds formed on the court. The Torch interviewed Logan Waller and Emily Potrony, athletes from the Olympic Heights Girls Varsity Basketball, for their insider perspectives on their season.
It is important to have the right mind set prior to stepping out on the court. “Before a big game, I like to listen to hype music that wakes me up and that puts me in a good mood,” Waller said. This kind of mental prep is key for turning pre-game jitters into a winning attitude. Waller believes that maintaining a positive attitude is crucial, and she actively works on staying optimistic even when facing challenges. This involves focusing on her strengths and visualizing successful outcomes for her and her team, which helps her approach each game with confidence and enthusiasm.
Another key to success is valuing the other players and demonstrating the importance of teamwork. “A good teammate will always lift you and hold you accountable, and when the whole team is that way, there is a sense of camaraderie that just makes you play better,” Potrony explained. This highlights how supportive teammates can help the whole team play their best. To ensure she’s at her optimal performance, Potrony values personal preparation. Before a game, she likes to clear her head to help her relax and focus. She also prioritizes a nutritious meal, which is essential for peak performance and providing the energy and stamina to play the duration of the game.
Both Waller and Potrony say basketball involves a mix of mental toughness, unwavering support, and dedicated passion. They believe that a team’s mental fortitude and teamwork are just as important as physical skills; displaying the ability to bounce back from a loss or setback and maintaining a positive attitude can make all the difference. The unwavering support the team provides each other creates a strong bond that enhances their performance to a game-changing degree. As they continued to chase their goals and win their games this past season, they proved that with the right attitude and the power of teamwork, anything is possible.
Of course, no team is complete without a strong leader, and this varsity basketball team is no exception. Keith McNeill, head coach, brings knowledge and experience to the court when coaching his team. This is McNeill’s fourth season coaching at Olympic Heights, and he believes that this season’s “girls basketball team are all standouts.” Coach McNeill noted that the team’s shooting and defense are their major assets, although rebounding can use a little work. McNeill tries to “challenge them to be better versions of themselves every game.” This has clearly paid off due to the team’s 16-3 winning record.
Beyond the wins and losses, being part of a girls basketball team offers important life skills. It teaches young women how to balance commitments, manage their time, and work towards a common goal. It instills resilience, discipline, and the ability to bounce back from setbacks. These are lessons that help them in college and in their future careers.
