The Demonization of PewDiePie
Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg, AKA PewDiePie, is the largest YouTuber on the planet. With over 53,000,000 people subscribed to his channel, he earns millions of views on every video uploaded. One of these videos was made in order to mock a certain website where people can pay five dollars for specific tasks and jobs. On the cite, he asked two people to hold up a sign stating “death to all jews.”
The two Fiverr (an online marketing service) employees, nicknamed The Funny Guys, who performed this task were banned from Fiverr. They, along with PewDiePie, begged for forgiveness with PewDiePie stating that he would rather have himself banned rather than destroy the two’s only source of income.
PewDiePie’s YouTube Red show, Scare PewDiePie, was cancelled as a result of the remarks, destroying a major source of income for the celebrity. He was also taken off of Maker Studios, the platform many YouTubers use to created videos.
Major media outlets such as Variety, and the Wall Street Journal depicted the YouTuber as a “savior to Nazis,” and accused him of always being racist. Despite the overwhelming support from other YouTubers calling out the media for exaggerating the story and taking things out of context, YouTube has not reinstated PewDiePie’s show and he is still blocked on Fiverr.
Although PewDiePie made an anti-Semitic remark and deserves some hate for it, major media outlets are purposely taking spoofs and satirical photos aimed towards making fun of the whole situation, such as dressing in a Nazi uniform and using that to label him as such. In the original video, PewDiePie was trying to take an edgy subject like racism and use it to elicit a comedic response. Is that so different than what South Park or Family Guy does on a weekly basis or what other comedians do for a living?
The two on Fiverr who started this whole event barely spoke English and had no idea what they were writing. That didn’t stop Fiverr from banning those two along with PewDiePie from their site. Even more ludicrous, Maker Studios employs YouTubers who use racist curse words in all of their content.
So what makes Felix Kjellberg so different? Is it the subscribers? The money? The unwanted attention gained from the situation? That much is unknown. What is known is how blown out of proportion this situation has become, and how much attention people are placing into this ordeal, which was never a big deal in the first place.
