Girls Soccer Beats Lauderdale 6-0; Boys Fall to River 4-2

In it’s first district contest of the year, the Olympic Heights girls soccer team blanked Ft. Lauderdale High 6-0, getting revenge for a bitter loss to the Flying L’s last year and improving its season record to 2-0-1.

The Lions scored early in the contest as Jaselyn Cappello scored 28 seconds into the game after pressuring and stealing a ball from a defender and chipping it over the goalkeeper’s head for the early lead.  However, that was the only offense that was produced in the next 60 minutes as the score remained 1-0 into the middle of the second half. Then, the fireworks began as OH scored five goals in 15 minutes to seal the 6-0 victory.

Just before the second half water-break, Eva Giordano sent in a corner kick that Sydney Durrance redirected to the net which Cappello put in for her second goal of the match.  Just moments later, Daniella Smith broke free up the right wing after Haley Jacobowitz played a perfect ball behind the defense.  Smith fired home a strong near post shot for the third goal of the match.

Moments later, Cappello started a passing combination back to Leah Goldwaser, who one-touched it to Giordano.  Giordano settled the ball and took a perfectly placed shot for her first goal of the season.  Hannah Gottlieb set up the next goal with a ball sent down the line, where Smith did a carbon copy of her earlier goal.  Junior Varsity player Ariana Steighner, who was called up for the game, looked to be fouled in the box, but she still managed to assist Jacobowitz’s goal, a high shot over the keepers head for the final tally.

Victoria Barreto earned her third shutout making 4 saves in the match.

“To get this win, and to be so convincing is huge, but we still have to stay humble and take things one game at a time,” Head Coach Jim Cappello remarked after the game.  “Just because today was our day, we will see Fort Lauderdale one, if not two more times this year.  The most important game will be the last time we see them, so this is great, but its just one game.  If anything, I am hoping this has given us more confidence.  I still do not have everyone seeing the same vision on the field, and we will continue working on that.”

While the girls were down in Ft. Lauderdale, the OH boys team opened its season at home last night, losing 4-2 to Spanish River. Lucas Silva and Esteban Goana scored goals for the Lions in the loss.

Both the girls and boys teams will play Boyd Anderson at home on Wednesday, Nov. 15, and will be at West Boca on Friday, Nov. 17.
