The vocal program of the Olympic Heights Fine Arts Department is off to an exciting and busy first semester.

The men of the OH choir participated in a countywide Men’s Day for singing at Bak Middle School of the Arts on Sept. 19. Twenty-one young men from OH joined the choir that day ending in a performance featuring over 300 middle and high school men from the Palm Beach County school district.

Additionally, five OH students auditioned for the Florida All-State Choir at Dreyfoos School of the Arts on Sept. 14, with all five qualifying and moving on to the last test on Oct. 14. “This was a very rigorous testing situation of theory and sight reading skill as well as vocal quality,” commented OH choir director Mr. Richard Andreacchio. “We are very proud of the students.”

The OH vocal program is also looking forward to participating in the Palm Beach County, Stetson University, and Florida Atlantic University Honor Choirs during the fall semester. “This will give our students the opportunity to visit a small and large university campus and experience working under the direction of fine conductors from around the state,” Andreacchio explains.

Additionally, Andreacchio notes, “We recently auditioned for the Walt Disney World Candlelight Processional held in December at Epcot. Fingers crossed!”

The choir has also begun its fundraising campaign. “We desperately need new risers and funds for performances,” Andreacchio explains. “Did you know that each concert we perform costs us almost $3,000? Consider the cost of hiring an accompanist, theater tech, and a security officer, getting the piano tuned, and purchase of music.”
