A love story that doesn’t go perfectly is a common trope in movies, but It Ends With Us isn’t your typical rom-com. Released on August 9th, 2024, this film grossed over 300 million dollars, establishing itself as one of the year’s biggest films. Despite its worldwide success and amazing reviews, the fictional movie about domestic violence has not been without controversy in real life. From trouble between co-stars to a problematic author, this movie brought the drama to Hollywood.
Before discussing the movie, let’s delve briefly into Colleen Hoover’s background. Hoover is a world-renowned author who has had multiple books on the New York Times bestseller list. When the movie adaptation of her popular book was announced, fans were ecstatic to see how the book would be transformed into a movie. Unfortunately, one theme from the story hit a little too close to Hoover’s home. Because of the film’s sensitive topic – domestic abuse – critics were shocked when it was revealed that Hoover’s own 21-year-old son was accused of sexual assault of a minor in early 2023. This minor allegedly reached out to Hoover for help. “[Hoover] repeatedly blocked the girl, though later on Facebook claimed she had simply not read the messages immediately, and contacted her once she realized what it was about,” The Observer reports. This controversy caused some fans to turn their back on Hoover after they accused her of trying to silence the victim to benefit her son. When a film is meant to shed light on the complexities of violence within a relationship, it was a little too much for fans when art began to imitate life.
When the film was released, so were merchandise and collaborations with brands. To showcase a movie that focuses on domestic violence, many thought it was weird to promote merch. In a now-controversial TikTok, Blake Lively, who portrays protagonist Lily Bloom, promoted the film by telling women to “grab your friends, wear your florals, and head out to see it.” While it’s natural for a movie star to encourage fans to watch the film, the oddity occurred when fans noticed that Lively was advertising her husband Ryan Reynolds’ new film, Deadpool & Wolverine, in conjunction with her own movie. Fans thought Lively was trying to recreate the “Barbenheimer” effect from 2023, and she received backlash for this. Lively also stated that “I think that you’re so much—and not to minimize it—but you are so much more than just a survivor or just a victim.” Lively’s comment was interpreted as not being sensitive to actual victims of abuse as it didn’t acknowledge the sense of shame many feel. This caused fans to criticize her comment and accuse her of downplaying the severity of abuse.
Another conflict between the two main stars was whether they should include the Lana Del Rey song “Cherry” in the film. Lively advocated for including this song on the soundtrack, yet her “[co-stars] begged me to take that song out of the movie,” Lively said in a recent interview with Hits Radio UK. No other cast member thought this song should be connected to the film as the song is specifically about domestic violence, and this isn’t the movie’s sole motif. This highlighted another creative difference between the co-stars, feuling more rumors about a strained relationship.
Rumors of controversy between the co-stars continued. Both the lead actor and movie director, Justin Baldoni plays the main character’s love interest Ryle Kincaid. With some fans disliking Lively’s aforementioned stance, many began to stand by Baldoni. At the premiere, fans realized that Baldoni spoke to the press by himself, while Lively and the rest of the cast participated in group interviews. This separation on the red carpet fueled rumors of tension behind the scenes between Lively and Baldoni. When Baldoni was asked by Today about the challenges he faced while juggling acting and directing, he stated, “You’re navigating complex personalities and trying to get everybody on the same page with the same vision.” While he doesn’t outright blame any specific co-star, it can be inferred that some problems arose behind the scenes.
Perhaps the most offensive comments were made about Lively herself. Various sources say Baldoni allegedly made Lively “uncomfortable” about her postpartum body on set. According to TMZ, Baldoni reportedly “went to his on-set trainer and asked how much she weighed and how he trained to protect his back injury.” Lively, who had recently given birth, thought that his comment came in a negative viewpoint and that he was trying to “fat-shame her.”
Despite the rumors of contention, fans came out in droves to watch the movie in theaters, causing fans to speculate on whether or not a movie of Hoover’s sequel, It Starts With Us, would be in production soon. Baldoni told ET how he won’t direct the sequel because he “thinks there are better people for that.” He believes that “Blake Lively’s ready to direct.” Is this Baldoni’s attempt to make amends and publically support his co-star?
Overall, this movie was a hit with many teens in South Florida. “It Ends With Us was everything I could’ve imagined and more,” Madison LeMaster, Olympic Heights senior, shared. “It was truly surreal seeing such an emotional book brought to the screen.”

This article did a good job of capturing the movie’s key themes and character dynamics. Their insights were really thoughtful and added a lot of depth to the analysis. Great work!

i thought it was an amazing article i think the reason she wrote the book was maybe almost to refer to her son and the whole situation maybe not even realizing it its the son story but she changes it up in order to not relate as much to the son if that makes sense

I think many of the controversies except the main one about domestic abuse don’t really matter that much. I can definitely see how the domestic abuse one could be very controversial.
Noah • Oct 18, 2024 at 11:42 am
Good article. Why did she make a movie about assault if her son just did it.
Nathaly • Oct 18, 2024 at 11:40 am
Great article! I had no idea all this tension had happened outside the set. I think some parts of the movie weren’t really agreeing with what the book talks about. But the movie itself turned out to be good.

I really liked the article. It’s very interesting how when movies shed light on issues that are common and are the cause of a lot of suffering worldwide, such as domestic abuse. If these issues overlap with the experiences of the actors or many of the fans, it can create big controversies, and it shows how careful film studios need to be when covering sensitive topics such as these.

The article does a good job at explaining the many controversies of this film. It was written in a professional manner.

I have seen the movie and it is so good! The violence and controversy in it was sad but very interesting. The behind the scenes stories are good but it’s crazy how so much can go on behind the scenes of things.

I think this amazing article does a great job of showing how different the book is from the movie. I do not think the movie did a great job of showing the point

It’s cool to read about the drama behind the scenes of movies. This article gives a lot of details on the controversies that happened.
Izzy • Oct 18, 2024 at 11:25 am
I never ended up reading or watching It Ends With Us, because I do not support Colleen Hoover, however this article informed me all about controversy I was unaware of. I enjoyed reading this article and all the information I had missed about this movies, its actors, and the author.
Leah • Oct 18, 2024 at 11:24 am
I never realized there was so much going on with the author and the actors. It’s interesting how people seem one way in a movie but they act totally different in real life.
Brielle Crawley • Oct 18, 2024 at 11:19 am
I haven’t read the book or seen the movie, but I know of the plot. It’s hard to imagine actors being real people when it’s so far from how we live as teenagers, but this is really revealing to what many actors and directors have to deal with when making movies
Tyler Santos • Oct 17, 2024 at 9:48 pm
Very informative article i must say. Though i haven’t personally seen the film yet, i can tell the characters well represent the novel. That controversy bit was very interesting, if i never saw this id just assume it was spick and span, not in the news much, at least to my viewings,
Catherine • Oct 17, 2024 at 6:55 pm
Great article! I went to see the movie but I didn’t read the book. I thought it was amazing. I noticed that it was controversial online and didn’t know the reason so this article brought me some clarity. In a way I felt like the drama from the cast overshadowed the actual movie.
mark • Oct 17, 2024 at 1:52 pm
i’m glad you wrote about this it shows how rough being in show biz and that’s not perfect even outside the set even before you do anything EVEN when the movie is finally over
Brianna WIlliams • Oct 17, 2024 at 1:40 pm
Wow. I think that this is a great story and that was very interesting I was very locked in when reading this article. I find it crazy how a lot of behind the scene things can go on and crazy stories that can go on behind the scenes of a movie
marissa • Oct 17, 2024 at 11:41 am
ive read the book and i believe the controversial is very understanding. the movie was very different from the book and didn’t show the representation the book tried to do. i believe that if you hadn’t read the book, the movie would be pretty good.
Giada • Oct 17, 2024 at 11:39 am
Noticed the part about Hoover’s son and the accusation, also it said she blocked the girl multiple times. said the film was a little too much for fans.
Hailey • Oct 17, 2024 at 11:30 am
I read the book and was honestly disappointed with how the movie turned out. Everything from the music, down to the styling choices didn’t match the book, and the cast could’ve been better. Even the way they showed abuse wasn’t realistic and didn’t show much awareness of domestic violence.
Audrey H • Oct 17, 2024 at 11:21 am
Great article! I really wanna watch the movie.
Anita Foster • Oct 16, 2024 at 9:41 pm
Great article Amanda! I read the book and haven’t seen the movie yet.
