The latest psychological thriller book turned into movie is definitely something to rave about. The Housemaid, based on the 2022 book by Freida McFadden, stars Sydney Sweeney, Brandon Sklenar, and Amanda Seyfried. The story begins somewhat nicely but quickly develops into an unpredictable and shocking sequence of events. The plot begins with Millie, played by Sweeney, when she interviews for a housemaid position at the Winchester residence. As time goes on, secrets between the family and her are spilled, revealing dark and disturbing truths, ultimately putting both the female leads (Nina Winchester is played by Seyfried) in dangerous situations.
This movie explores themes of domestic violence and abuse, which – albeit unconventionally – contribute to the overall aspect of feminism empowerment. The actors portray such a depth and realness in their characters, making the viewers keep themselves guessing throughout the duration of the film. The Housemaid holds an official rating of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, with professional critics calling it “outrageously enjoyable” and full of “dark humor.” Seyfried received the most praise and appreciation for her stellar acting and portrayal of Nina.
The attention to detail for the physical portrayal of the characters is worth noting. Nina Winchester, presented as the crazy, unstable wife, dresses almost as an obsessive psych ward patient, with uneven makeup and hair to throw the viewers off of realizing the actual villain. Andrew Winchester, depicted as the loving husband and knight in shining armor, makes it hard to believe when he ultimately shows his true colors. Finally, Millie, the housemaid, is portrayed as the victim, walking into a trap she didn’t know existed. Her background makes her vulnerable to manipulation and desperation, leading to all of the secrets unfolding in the Winchester estate.
Shock and surprise were common feelings when the plot began to dramatically shift. Alexa Andersen, senior at Olympic Heights, describes The Housemaid as “suspenseful” and “twisted.” She liked it so much that she paid to see the movie twice. “I enjoyed how it encapsulated important themes of feminism, while also keeping me on the edge of my seat,” explains Andersen. The casting choices were “on point,” and she felt as though the main actors added a popularity factor, due to the prior success of the actors in other films. Other reviews describe it as “insane,” and most recommend it for a more mature audience, as well as saying that they would definitely rewatch it once it is available to stream.
Personally, I saw the movie twice at the cinema. I agree that the movie was excellent and completely draws viewers in. The twists and unexpected secrets create a subtle dark atmosphere. This movie is definitely something I would recommend to anyone who loves an unpredictable and mature thriller, although – spoiler alert – it does depict violence. I loved the character development and slow reveal of all the characters’ pasts. This is one of the best psychological thriller movies I have had the pleasure of viewing.
Overall, this film has received mostly positive reviews and ratings. With the perfection of casting, mixed with the intense on-screen chemistry, this movie is definitely a must watch!

This article is very well written and has helpful information on the new thriller mystery film called “The Housemaid”. The author mentions how this is a film adaptation of the book “The Housemaid”, and that it’s suspenseful, and twisted, but still very enjoyable even though it covers some tougher darker themes. I probably won’t watch this movie.
