The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is a worldwide phenomenon. It blends fashion, entertainment, and celebrity into one show that captivates millions. When it was first introduced in 1995, the show quickly became a hit, showcasing top supermodels in extravagant lingerie designs while featuring some of the biggest names in the music industry.
From 1995-2019, the show was one of the most-watched fashion displays every year, but rumors circulated that behind the scenes the show wasn’t what it seemed. In July 2019, The New York Times reported that L Brands CEO Leslie H. Wexner had ties to convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Consequently, the company canceled its long-running fashion show a month after it was announced. In November of that year, Edward Razek, L Brands’ chief marketing officer, said in an interview with Vogue that “no one” had any interest in seeing plus-size models on the Victoria’s Secret runway and that the show should not feature transgender models.
After the questionable views from the company’s CEOs became public, the iconic lingerie brand canceled its show in 2019 due to plummeting ratings and bad criticism for being outdated and lacking in diversity. After a 5 year hiatus, the infamous fashion show returned in October 2024 with the promise of changing its views and wanting to showcase “who we are today,” a representative from Victoria’s Secret said.
With the return of the show, fans hoped changes like including plus-size and transgender models would be showcased without removing any of the glitz and glamour. The 2024 event featured some of the brand’s veteran runway stars, including models Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Behati Prinsloo, and Candice Swanepoel. Performances were sung by Tyla, black-pink star Lisa, and Grammy-award winner Cher.
The updated catwalk included more diversity than the previous years. Models over the age of 40 were featured for the first time, including the runway debut of former First Lady of France Carla Bruni, who at 56 became the oldest model to walk a Victoria’s Secret runway show. Further proving it was more inclusive, plus size models strutted down the Victoria’s Secret runway for the first time: Ashley Graham, Paloma Elsesser, Kai Soleil, and more who all ranged from size 8 to 16. The runway also included two transgender models, Alex Consani and Valentina Sampaio.
The fashion show streamed live on YouTube, with an average of 1.3 million viewers tuning in. Despite the brand’s commitment to showcasing new talent and bringing changes to the show, fans were still disappointed with the outcome of the show. According to Fashion Dive, “Out of the 52 models in the show, just 10 represented any sort of change to its previous policies, and there were no models at all who reflected Victoria’s Secret’s previously stated interest in supporting adaptive fashion.”
Viewers online felt that the show looked cheap; they also wondered if Victoria’s Secret was more worried about representation rather than giving us the true fashion show. Many believed the show could have been better and are wondering if Victoria’s Secret will make improvements next year – if the fashion powerhouse decides to put on another spectacular. BMO Capital Markets Managing Director Simeon Siegel said, “We do not think the show is a shoo-in for a repeat next year just yet, as management evaluates whether this is the right medium for messaging and whether every 12 months is the right time frame.”

I love Victoria secret fashion shows, but I think they should’ve leaned into their original look more. I would’ve preferred the iconic bombshell blowouts well written article though!

i really did not the victoria secret fashion show. they shouldn’t have brought it back if they weren’t going to bring it back to their full potential.
delanie • Feb 11, 2025 at 12:03 pm
I love Victoria secret fashion shows, but I think they should’ve leaned into their original look more. I would’ve preferred glowy makeup and the iconic bombshell blowouts, and also definitely not Adriana Lima in plaid and a slick back. well written article though!

This story is good because it explains the times in which the shows took place and when they first started. It also doesn’t just show all the good parts of the story. In the 3rd paragraph it tells the reader why shows are canceled and the problems that come with it.

Great story! I find it super great that they brought back this iconic fashion show even if it’s not the same as it was before. I do agree that they could have done better.

This is such a good and interesting article! I loved watching the show but I also feel like they could’ve added more like given some of the girls the iconic blowouts instead of the slick backs to make more of a statement.

Izzy • Feb 11, 2025 at 11:18 am
I really enjoyed this article and I hope that it is not a facade. I would love to see more diversity in models and not just because they feel as if they have to.
Chase • Feb 11, 2025 at 9:54 am
Great article! I’m glad there was more diversity this year than last year.
Leah • Feb 10, 2025 at 4:16 pm

This article talks about the show really well. It’s really nice how the show has a lot of diversity
Mattias • Feb 10, 2025 at 1:01 pm
Instead of being worried about being inclusive, they should probably worry more about the products being shown and the quality of the show. This article was interesting to read.
Max • Feb 10, 2025 at 12:11 pm
Diversity is a very challenging issue in the fashion industry. Hopefully next year the fashion shows will go better.
Maxim Makushkin • Feb 10, 2025 at 11:41 am
nice story, though I am not interested in fashion so I don’t have a particular opinion on that story.
Kyle • Feb 10, 2025 at 11:33 am
Its so cool that things like fashion shows are now able to be more inclusive, and companies like Victoria secret are able to effectively take criticism from the audience.
Kyle • Feb 10, 2025 at 11:31 am
It’s so cool knowing that something like fashion shows are now able to return with more inclusivity, while also listening to what their audience wants and providing it.
Deangelo Barrera • Feb 10, 2025 at 11:29 am
What an interesting article. The changes made to the show seem superficial.
Audrey H • Feb 10, 2025 at 11:28 am
This is so cool that you guys covered this. I thought the show was so disappointing.
Brianna Williams • Feb 10, 2025 at 11:25 am
I think its really cool that The Victoria Secret Fashion Show was one of the most-watched fashion show displays of the year. I find it crazy that L brands Ceo has ties with Jeffrey Epstein. Very good and entertaining story.
mark pinto • Feb 10, 2025 at 11:22 am
i’m glad victoria is expanding their view on “beautiful” now letting older people and trans people and such join the fashion shows it’s a good level of maturity
Brielle Crawley • Feb 10, 2025 at 11:20 am
I think it is very interesting what Victoria’s secret has done. They definitely need more diversity, coming from a chubbier gbtq member, and only ten people is not enough
marissa • Feb 10, 2025 at 11:20 am
I thought the show was nice. It is good that they are starting to show more diversity.
