Uber’s lack of background checks puts users in danger

In light of recent events, handily calling an Uber when in need of a lift does not live up to its previous reputation. Multiple dangerous experiences associated with the company have been illuminated to the public within the past few months, and the findings are frightening for those who had previously thought the service was indisputably safer than hailing a cab.

The organization “Who’s Driving You?” has made it their mission to expose Uber and another similar, yet less popular company, Lyft, on their negligence when it comes to the safety and well-being of their customers. On their website, the organization lists a total of one hundred and thirty-four dangerous and illegal reported instances associated with the two companies, separated by categories: deaths, assaults, sexual assaults, kidnappings, felons, imposters, and DUIs, all equally as shocking.

According to the website, neither Lyft nor Uber use in-depth background checks that include fingerprinting or a law enforcement search when hiring drivers. In fact, Uber does not even take the crucial step of meeting with the driver before allowing him/her to begin picking up passengers; therefore, it is an alarming truth that some of the most dangerous members of society have the capacity to victimize those who are merely looking for a safe ride home and who would not realize their mistake until it is too late.

To illustrate some of the most startling examples listed on the website, a Florida passenger has had a gun pulled on him by his driver; a Los Angeles woman claims that her driver broke her jaw; a Philadelphia woman claims her driver both raped and kidnapped her; and perhaps most terrifying, approximately a year ago, the FBI arrested an ISIS sympathizer in Miami, who just so happened to pass the “extensive background check” to become an Uber driver.

In response to the compilation of these horrible events into one, cohesive list that has aroused an angry percentage of the company’s regular users, Uber has released this statement: “We are working hard to ensure passengers everywhere can get a safe, reliable ride, as well as to provide great customer service when things go wrong.”
