In June 2025, Netflix released what has very quickly become the must-see movie of the year: K-Pop Demon Hunters. Accumulating over 540 million views to date, the film made history as the most-watched film on Netflix, and it is clear that its following will only continue to grow.

Beginning production in early 2021, Sony’s K-Pop Demon Hunters instantly splashed in the entertainment industry. The movie follows a trio of K-Pop girls known as HUNTR/X who serve as pop stars by day and demon slayers by night. Throughout the movie, they not only face conflict with the demon threat but also amongst themselves as they discover secrets and shames that only bring them closer to one another.

Director Maggie Kang says that one of her main missions when creating the movie was to make a film with “deep, adult” themes that can resonate with an older audience “but [are]… enjoyable for a younger audience.” Her mission was considered a success, as the fanbase amassed consists of various ages and demographics around the globe. Upon the monumental success of the movie, theaters around North America, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand held showcases for two days. Fans of all ages attended over 1,000 sold out screenings for the sing-along showcase of their new favorite movie.

One of the biggest successes of this movie is the jaw-dropping soundtrack. EJAE, who is a popular song writer among K-Pop groups like TWICE, is responsible for writing a majority of the songs and serving as the singing voice for the leader of HUNTR/X, Rumi. The hit song “Golden” gained the most traction, attaining nearly 430 million streams on Spotify as well as holding the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for 7 consecutive weeks.

“It was a lot,” says EJAE in an interview with Forbes when discussing the songwriting process. However, her hard work paid off, as the soundtrack debuted at #8 on the Billboard 200, and it was the highest debut of any soundtrack in 2025 on the Billboard 200. The singing voices of HUNTR/X, EJAE, Audrey Nuna (Mira), and Rei Ami (Zoey), have received the honor of presenting a VMA Award, making an appearance on Saturday Night Live, and sitting in on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

As award season begins to roll around, there is no doubt that this movie will put up a fight. It’s been nominated for numerous awards, such as Best Original Song and Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. The song “Golden” was also nominated for Song of the Summer at the VMAs, although it did not win. The three singers have described that they are “over the moon” about the success and love the film has received.

After only a few months of its release, an incessant demand for a sequel is evident. Sony has announced a sequel as soon as 2027, and it is clear that the fans are willing to wait as long as it takes for this special story to continue.
