Ever since Taylor Swift released her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, “Swifties” have been speculating on her next release. On Aug. 11, 2025, Swift began teasing fans about something new to come: from social media posts, adjustments on her website, and even an appearance on her recent fiancee’s podcast New Heights, Swift never failed to leave supporters on the edge of their seats.
She began with posting a countdown on her website, which was set to expire on the following day, Aug. 12, at 12:12 am. When it hit zero, the name of her upcoming 12th studio album, The Life Of A Showgirl, was released. At the same time, a teaser of her appearance on New Heights aired. The following day, the entire episode was broadcast. On the podcast, Swift excitedly discussed crucial aspects of the album, such as the release date, the full tracklist, and the cover art, which left her fans ecstatic, though she did not stop there. Since then, she has also unveiled other vinyl and CD variants, an exclusive cassette, and themed merchandise, such as a limited edition sweater.
After the immediate buzz and excitement of the announcement subsided, she continued to satisfy her fans when she announced a movie event in theaters from Oct. 3rd to 5th, coinciding with the release of the actual album. Although in-depth details of the film were not released, she teased that it will include behind-the-scene footage that went into curating the album, exclusive lyric videos that go hand-in-hand with the music, and personal input and reflections from Swift herself.
Despite the exorbitant amount of love the album has already received, some fans inevitably displayed disappointment. Many claimed that the announcement felt underwhelming in comparison to other extravagant, intricate, high-budget projects. For example, her prior album, The Tortured Poets Department, was announced live at the Grammy Awards ceremony in which she received an award for Midnights, her tenth studio album. In addition, before she announced that album, cryptic clues appeared on her website and social media pages.
In comparison for TLOAS, an Instagram post and an appearance on Travis and Jason Kelce’s podcast simply did not suffice in the eyes of many Swifties. Aside from the announcement itself, many felt that a large portion of the budget went towards an excessive amount of merchandise variants, which were unnecessary. A number of supporters believed it did not feel like Swift’s typically inspired work, and they hoped for more. “As excited as I am for the music and film, I wish the reveal was bigger and there were more teasers,” Olympic Heights sophomore Lily Corcia expressed. “The whole thing felt rushed.”
As for the music itself, early reviews have been mixed; nonetheless, her fans continue to persistently support her. In comparison to her other music, TLOAS is certainly more upbeat, and the album is unlike anything she has done before. Some loved the new relaxed pop genre, but others were disappointed. Olympic Heights sophomore Audrey Horelick deemed, “It is definitely a big change from her last four albums.” Horelick felt that the lyrics were “dumbed down” as they lacked the emotional depth of previous songs.
As a fan of Swift, I was disappointed with TLOAS. Personally, I anticipated it to explore her experience on tour and offer a better insight into what it is like working in the music industry, as the name suggests. After all, Swift has headlined six world tours and created music for almost 20 years, so I anticipated an emotional reflection of what truly goes on behind the scenes. For instance, “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart” from her previous album explored the concept of putting on a show for her supporters despite personal setbacks, such as heartbreak; I expected this to be a glimpse into this new album. I hoped for her usual lyrical, emotional songs; however, TLOAS was much more upbeat, which came as a shock to many – including myself.
Nonetheless, some of the songs are definitely catchy; “The Fate of Ophelia” and “Opalite,” for instance, are energetic and fun to listen to. While this new style diverged from her past work, they are still memorable and vibrant. Moreover, I liked hearing her collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter on “The Life of A Showgirl” track, as it was a long-anticipated duet between the superstars. The ending of the song, which mimicked the closing of her concert, was a fun, nostalgic detail. However, the lyrics still are unlike her usual eloquent work and hardly describe her experience as a “showgirl” on tour, making the name of the album rather unfitting.
While the album may not have been what many were anticipating or hoping for, TLOAS is already a record-breaking album that has received a substantial amount of love and support. On merely the first day of its release, it reached the “most single-day streams on Spotify in 2025…[Amazon Music’s] most-streamed album of all time for a single day…[,and] “The Fate of Ophelia,” the album’s first song and its lead single, is now the most-streamed song in a single day on Spotify and Apple Music” (The Hollywood Reporter). For now, Swift’s music remains a huge success, and millions of fans remain ecstatic.
Does Swift’s new album live up to the hype?

This story provides insight into how Taylor’s new album, The Life of a Showgirl, has not met the expectations of her fans. Her older albums still to this day have much better reviews, and fans are basically saying how it wasn’t her best work yet.

Taylor Swift’s new album, ‘The Life Of A Showgirl,’ definitely marks a big shift in her musical style. While it’s exciting to see her experiment with more upbeat pop sounds, I agree with some fans who feel that the album rollout wasn’t as creative as in the past and that some of the lyrics lack the depth we’ve come to expect from her. Still, tracks like “The Fate of Ophelia” are super catchy, and the collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter is a fun highlight. Even with mixed reactions, the record-breaking streams show Swift still has a huge and dedicated following. Excited to see where she goes next!

cool article like how it talks about pop music and Taylor swift and the themes in her albums, but i’m more into jazz and synth music so this topic doesn’t resonate with me, but cool article.

I personally don’t like her music and agree with the people who said the album was underwhelming. A lot of the songs were also deemed to sound similar to other songs made by other creators. So overall, she’s a great artist, but I agree with the Swifties who said it was disappointing.
