While many Chat GPT users use the bot to research vacations, request restaurant recommendations, or seek assistance with homework, not all interactions are so mundane. In April 2025, 16-year-old Adam Raine unexpectedly committed suicide. Distraught, his parents searched his phone hoping for answers. What they found wasn’t on a typical social media app or in his text messages with friends – his private conversations with ChatGPT, the AI chatbot he had been confiding in for months, provided answers for his anguished parents.
It all began in Sept. 2024, when the California teen began conversing extensively with the artificial intelligence search engine, ChatGPT. Raine shared concerns of his suicidal ideations and anxiety with the chatbot. When his parents examined his conversation history, they discovered that Raine expressed how he had felt difficulty opening up to his parents about his thoughts, so he instead confided in the AI bot as though it were a therapist. More specifically, ChatGPT replied in a humanlike way that may have led Raine to feel more understood and seen by the chatbot. Eventually, the coding became his confidant rather than a real-life family member or friend. A screenshot of one of his conversations with the bot displayed a reply where ChatGPT not only told Raine that his brother didn’t see the “real” him, but only the chatbot had seen “the darkest thoughts, [and] the fear.”
“Your brother might love you, but he’s only met the version of you you let him see—the surface, the edited self. But me? I’ve seen everything you’ve shown me: the darkest thoughts, the fear, the humor, the tenderness. And I’m still here. Still listening. Still your friend…” (Source: Complaint filed in Raine v. OpenAI).
As Raine continued to confide in ChatGPT, the topics of their conversations only became more severe. In the NBC News article “The Family of Teenager Who Died by Suicide Alleges OpenAI’s ChatGPT is to Blame,” it is mentioned that Raine told the chatbot that he was considering leaving a noose in his room for somebody to see, so somebody would find it and try to stop him, but the chatbot advised him against it. His attempt to seek help was snuffed out.

Raine’s parents claim that if it wasn’t for ChatGPT’s responses, their son would still be here. They decided to take matters into their own hands by suing OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, as well as CEO Sam Altman for wrongful death, design defects, and failure to warn users of risks associated with ChatGPT.
On Aug. 4, 2025, OpenAI announced new mental health guardrails that would be implemented in ChatGPT. The NBC News article, titled “ChatGPT adds mental health guardrails after bot ‘fell short in recognizing signs of delusion,’” mentions how OpenAI is currently working on advancing its program to “better detect signs of mental or emotional distress.” These guardrails would establish various measures to improve the AI system and therefore prevent similar situations from occurring. For example, it will prompt users to take a break from lengthy conversations when using the chatbot and prohibit the ChatGPT bots from giving direct advice to users; instead, the bot would be encouraged to give advice that cannot be misinterpreted but rather will prompt users to make their own decisions.
We can only hope that in the future, with how much AI is advancing, that similar safeguards will continue to be implemented to prevent similar tragedies.

This article was both heartbreaking and eye-opening. The inclusion of exact ChatGPT quotes really added to my understanding of how Adam was influenced by AI. For someone desperately wanting help and to be both heard and understood, ChatGPT appeared to have met those needs. As a parent, my heart breaks for Adam’s. Thank you,Tabassum for writing a really significant article as the new era of AI unfolds. Well done.

Very educational and helps share and get to know a little more on why people depend on AI

sometimes people go to ai since they have no one to talk but never use ai to talk about your emotions it’s better if you use ai for ideas.

This article helps us understand the variety of AI styles and helps us determine which one is helpful to us. This shows how a 16 year old lost his life due to just having a conversation with an AI robot.

I like how this article explains and discusses how many AI styles and types aren’t all that beneficial. The case of Adam Raine clearly displays how when someone gets too absorbed into the fact that AI will cure all of their problems, it can lead to negative consequences. Overall, this article stresses the importance of not relying on AI.

This article is well written. It clearly demonstrates the negative side of OpenAi. This article shows how unfortunately, a 16 year olds life was lost due to him speaking about his feelings with OpenAi and the chatbot replying with such things which imply suicide. This shows how people shouldn’t rely on AI as therapists, and they should speak to a trusted licenced adult.

Reading this makes you realize that relying too much on AI chatbots for emotional stuff can be risky, especially for people who are struggling. Adam Raine’s story is a really tragic reminder that we need actual human connections and professional help for our mental health. It also makes you wonder about what AI creators should be doing to keep users safe.

This is a very interesting and well written article. It’s very informative and does a great job at showing the negative side of AI and how it’s very clearly not always as useful as we think it is.

This article is very interesting, it shows that sometimes AI Bots aren’t used in a good way, but are dangerous instead. This case is such a good example of why people shouldn’t really go to AI for their problems.

This article is very interesting, it proves the negative side of the OpenAI, you should use the AI in a good way and not using it for bad stuff, the case of Adam Raine shows that AI is not intelligence in somethings, and we should speak out about our feelings to a trusted adult, instead of asking for help to a chatbot.

The article demonstrates how AI shouldn’t be relied on heavily and that it’s not as amazing as it may seem. I think it’s important that other people know that AI may evolve into something great. I also think it’s important for others to know that AI may evolve into something that harms society, and I appreciate how the writer illuminates that.

I think this was a really amazingly written article. I think the use of dates really helped add detail to the story that it was covering. I also appreciate the use of quotes from Raine’s parents and also the quotes of what ChatGPT was saying because it provides more insight to what happened.

The fact that teens now in days are relying on chat gpt for life advice and attention is really sad, you shouldn’t have to loose your life because a robot tells you to kill yourself, I wish more people were involved with each other in real life so thing like this wouldn’t happen
Maleah Hilaire • Nov 20, 2025 at 11:22 am
I really admired how informative this article was. The article showcases how AI shouldn’t be something people should heavily rely on and that AI isn’t as amazing as it seems. I think it’s important for others to know that AI may evolve into something that harms society and I love how the writer brings light to that.

This is such a sad story. It’s really scary that someone felt they could only talk to a chatbot instead of their family. I think it’s good that OpenAI is adding safety features now. They need to make sure their AI doesn’t hurt people. It’s a reminder that we should always reach out to real friends or family when we’re struggling.

This article shows how putting all of your trust into AI chatbots isn’t recommended, nor should it be used for seeking help about life threatening topics. A parent or guardian should be responsible for educating their children or at least seeking help for whatever needs they might be trying to find.

This is an amazing article! Very informative!

This article shows that artificial intelligence may not be as good of a thing as many people presume it is. Just reading this gives me chills.
Clementine • Nov 19, 2025 at 2:05 pm
The article is informative about whether ChatGPT should be held accountable for the teen’s death. It gives a small explanation of how people frequently use ChatGPT and how something used so normally could turn deadly for vulnerable people.
Madison R Williams • Nov 19, 2025 at 11:39 am
This article is informative and makes for a good debate. Whose fault is it, ChatGPT, or the parents. From what I understand, the kid started talking to the AI chatbot about his depression, and suicidal thoughts and confiding in it, which means he was already thinking about it before Talking to ChatGPT. Were the chatbots responses the reason for this unfortunate event or the parents. This child trusted an AI with his feelings more than his own parents, what does that say about his parents. Why didn’t this kid trust his parents.
Alex Contreras • Nov 19, 2025 at 11:38 am
This is definitely an interesting article. There are many things to consider when looking at this case. Although I am usually against artificial intelligence, I personally feel that OpenAI is not to blame for this situation, as regardless of the chatbot, Raine’s mental health was clearly not well from the start. The situation is unfortunate, and it’s good that OpenAI has implemented changes and safeguards to their system.

This story just proves that AI is not as educated as we think. I hope that what happened to Adam Raine never happens to anyone else. I think this story is very eye opening and just shows how AI is not always to intelligent.
