Softball Team Downs Cardinal Newman 9-2 for Season Opening Victory

Freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Cunningham scattered six hits and struck out 13 batters while surrendering only two runs over seven innings as the Olympic Heights softball team won its 2017 season opener at Cardinal Newman, downing the Crusaders 9-2, Monday, Feb. 13.

The Lions took an early lead in the first inning, but Cardinal Newman tied the game at 2-2 in the third inning. The Lions took the lead for good in the top of the fourth and eventually pulled away to the decisive victory in the later innings.

Theresa Stettner led the Heights offensive attack, going three for four at the plate. In all, the Lions tallied 12 hits with Kelly Montilla and Cunningham each having multiple hits.

The OH softball team next plays at Atlantic on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 4:00pm, and holds it season home opener hosting Forest Hill on Thursday, Feb. 16, at 6:00.
